Iron is essential for ribonucleotide reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in DNA synthesis. The rapidly dividing hair matrix has high iron demands. Low iron reduces oxygen delivery to follicles (via hemoglobin) and impairs cellular energy production. Ferritin (iron storage protein) levels below 30-70 ng/mL are associated with increased hair shedding.
